Suffolk’s parish workhouses were in operation between the 1570s and the 1834 Poor Law
Amendment Act. Today’s talk describes the three types of workhouse that existed in the county
over a period of nearly 400 years. It examines the first of these places of residence and employment
– the parish workhouse – and describes the type of premises used, where to find them, how they
were managed, the types of inmate, and the effect they had on the local economy.
