Choirs Combine for Big Number

The Ipswich Bach Choir and the Felixstowe-based Dorian Singers have announced they will join forces to perform Mendelssohn’s magnificent oratorio Elijah in Felixstowe next spring. The combined choirs will perform under the baton of the well-known Patrick McCarthy, Musical Director of the Ipswich Bach Choir, in St John’s Church, Felixstowe, on 9 May 2015.

Many of the larger pieces in the great classical repertoire need more substantial choral forces than most amateur choirs can normally muster. Elijah is one of these, with its opposing choruses calling on the names of Baal and Jehovah, and climactic scenes as fire descends from heaven to ignite the sacrifice. The collaboration of these two choirs in the sweep of its great music will provide a wonderful experience for musicians and audience alike, especially when performed (as on this occasion) not only by a large choir but with a full array of soloists and orchestra. The chance to sing or listen to this is un-missable.

On December 6th this year, the Ipswich Bach Choir will perform parts I-III of Bach’s wonderful Christmas Oratorio, which is packed with music and tunes equally memorable but of quite different character from the rousing choruses of Elijah. Over the last two years, IBC has performed Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s The Creation, as well as shorter works such as Vivaldi’s Gloria – in spite of its name it is by no means restricted to works by Bach.

If choral singing and the riches of the classical repertoire interest and attract you, why don’t you consider joining one of these choirs? Both choirs would still welcome more singers – not only for Elijah but for other performances too. They both rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and will start again in September. They are genuinely friendly, with no trace of musical (or any other) snobbery, and no audition is necessary, though some musical knowledge is helpful.

If any of this sounds attractive, visit the IBC website at www.ipswichbachchoir.org.uk or ring 01394-283052 or 10394-271538. You will receive a warm reception and find it the start of a wonderful experience.
