ADLEBURGH MUSIC – 23rd year of Schools’ Music Festival

From Monday 8 to Saturday 13 March, around 1,600 pupils from 45 Suffolk schools will perform at Snape Maltings Concert Hall as part of the annual event A Celebration of Schools’ Music.

Sponsored by Trinity Guildhall and now in its 23rd year, Celebration features everything from jazz and rock bands, choirs and orchestras to ensembles and cross-arts pieces, demonstrating the wide range of work currently being produced within local schools. All ages, all stages and all abilities are brought together in this musical extravaganza.

‘ A Celebration of Schools’ Music gives pupils from Suffolk schools the chance to experience the magic of performing in front of 800 people, on a stage where some of the world’s greatest musicians have played,’ says Lizzie Woods, Projects Officer at Aldeburgh Music. ‘I took part in Celebration when I was at school and, like other people I know who have taken part, I’ve never forgotten what an amazing experience it was.’

Celebration is the result of a long-standing and productive partnership between Aldeburgh Music and Suffolk County Council, with all ages of Suffolk maintained schools (primary, middle and high) being represented during the week.

A Celebration of Schools’ Music runs from 8–13 March at Snape Maltings Concert Hall. Performances begin at 7pm. Tickets are £6 (£3 for under 27s) and are available from the Aldeburgh Music Box Office on 01728 687110 or online at www.aldeburgh.co.uk.

Mimi Khalvati – Described by George Szirtes as “one of the most poignant and graceful poets currently writing in England”, Mimi Khalvati has published six collections and her work has been translated into nine languages. Her poems are full of generosity of spirit and touch on joyous celebrations of the physical world, snapshots from childhood and tender poems of family, loss and love.

Roger Robinson – “We need poets like Roger Robinson,” says Bernardine Evaristo who describes the Trinidadian writer as “a fresh, daring, sensitive, clear-sighted and big-hearted poetic voice”. Part of a new generation of writers who take their cues from music and comedy, his energetic performances have won him a legion of loyal fans. He delivered a memorable reading at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival last autumn.
