at St Peter's by the Waterfront

St Peter's Church, College Street, Ipswich, Suffolk IP4 1DD

Come and see the eight Ipswich Charter Hangings now in their permanent home in St Peter’s Church, Ipswich. Created for the millennium to mark the granting of the Royal Charter to Ipswich in 1200, the Hangings form a sequence depicting events in the history of the town from the Vikings to the end of the twentieth century. They give a unique pictorial approach to history showing how the town of Ipswich has changed through the centuries, and are linked by the river running through them. Designed, directed and researched by Isabel Clover and created by her past and present students, every building, artefact or pattern is taken from one in the town.
There are commentaries available to guide you, or you can purchase a souvenir book, The Ipswich Charter Hangings which also describes how the Hangings were created. Sets of postcard reproductions of the Hangings and an illustrative map are also available.
