Catching up with Local Artists

Elizabeth Ferretti is a Felixstowe writer who has just completed the Arts Council England, East, Escalator programme. Run by the New Writing Partnership in Norwich, this prestigious programme has offered support to ten East Anglian writers over the past year, Elizabeth being the only one from Suffolk. This year the Escalator programme was specifically designed to support writers attempting the novel for the first time.

Elizabeth told images that she was an editor and writer of non-fiction previously (and still edits a magazine for children overseas learning English). She praises the Escalator programme very highly for the support given to her - financial to provide writing time, through the mentoring scheme where she has been helped monthly with the techniques of novel-writing, and learning about how to market her novel eventually.

Her novel, Anglian Archipelago, is not yet complete, but is set about 200 years into the future, imagining how life in East Anglia might be given environmental change, and how language might develop in those circumstances. She feels there is a cyclical element here, as maybe the landscape will be similar to centuries ago. Elizabeth told me she was inspired to write this when she found a Neolithic hide-scraping flint tool at the base of Dunwich cliff, and suddenly felt connected to previous lives in this area.
A novel to watch out for!

Erdem Misirlioglu – readers of images will recall a recent interview with Erdem, shortly before he played a Rachmaninov piano concerto with the Wolsey Orchestra in February. He told us at that time that he had reached the finals of the keyboard section of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2008. Many TV viewers will have been enthralled by his playing in that competition a few weeks ago, and delighted that he got through to the overall final. Sadly, he did not win the Young Musician award, but nevertheless delighted everyone with his playing, skill and poise.

Images caught up with Erdem to congratulate him on what has been a great achievement. He told us that he is looking forward to ‘chilling out’ during the summer (he is just finishing his A-levels now), then, as part of the BBC prize, he has a performance at the Wigmore Hall in October. He is looking forward to taking up his studies at the Guildhall School of Music full-time in the autumn. I’m sure we all wish Erdem well, and look forward to seeing him play again.
